About Katie

Katie is a British opera director and theatre-maker, working regularly with companies such as Opera North, Longborough Festival Opera, and Oxford Opera. Having previously trained as an opera singer, Katie now predominantly works as a director, associate/assistant director, and producer.

She graduated with a Masters from Trinity Laban Conservatoire in 2021, having previously graduated from Cardiff University with a B.A. in Music and History, where she was the recipient of the Sir Geraint Evans Award for Outstanding Vocal Performance. Upon graduating, Katie was mentored by Noa Naamat as part of the Jette Parker Young Artist Scheme with the Royal Opera House.

Recent/upcoming directing credits include: Longborough Festival Opera (‘Playground Opera: Hansel and Gretel’), Oxford Opera (‘The Marriage of Figaro’, 'Tosca'), Rose Opera ('Cavalleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci'), Cardiff Cotswold Opera ('La bohème', 'Mansfield Park') , Three Chairs and a Hat ('Mrs Pack'). Recent associate/assistant credits include: Opera North ('La Boheme'), Longborough Festival Opera ('Dido and Aeneas', 'L'Orfeo'), English Touring Opera ('Ottone', 'Agrippina', 'Tamerlano', 'Zoo!').

Katie is eager to celebrate diverse storytelling in her opera making, and is passionate about exploring and utilising modern theatrical techniques in her work. She is particularly interested in the accessible and environmentally sustainable options opened up by game theatre and immersive projects. Katie is also deeply interested in telling women’s stories, and in holding a light up to the often-complex gender politics of opera.

Katie is co-founder of All Aboard Opera!, an initiative founded to promote innovation and accessibility in opera. Katie is also the co-founder of Sorelle Singers, an operatic trio that aims to celebrate the forgotten women of opera and musical theatre; Katie still works as a professional soprano, and can often be found singing with Sorelle.

In addition to her directing work, Katie works as a producer, most recently for Creation Theatre, and in theatre education; in 2020 she helped found Oxford Opera's education programme and worked as their education director. She also works as an arts and charity fundraiser; most recently, for The Gatehouse (Oxford), Opera Prelude, and Oxford Opera.
